When most people hear Mixed Martial Arts, mental wellness probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.

They think of the UFC, the Octagon, knockouts, blood, and fighters pushing themselves to their physical limits.

That’s the side of MMA we see.

What we see much less often is everything happening inside the fighter; the fear, adrenaline, self-doubt, exhaustion, discipline, and mental adjustments required to keep going.

That less visible side of the sport has become an important inspiration behind one of Simply Serene’s four main modules:

The Corner: MMA Reset

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend time with former professional MMA fighter and coach James Lee while we continued discussing how this part of Simply Serene could develop.

After a photoshoot, our conversation continued outside for more than an hour as James shared stories about fighting, coaching, and what happens between rounds.

One lesson stayed with me:

A good corner has to understand what the fighter needs in that moment.

James told us about a fight where one of his fighters was struggling; not because he had forgotten how to fight, but because he was carrying the pressure of not wanting to disappoint his team.

James didn’t overwhelm him with technical instructions or yell at him.

He connected with him.

He reminded him that everyone in his corner was there to support him.

In another fight, the problem was completely different. His fighter wasn’t battling self-doubt; he was simply exhausted.

This time James became loud and energetic, trying to wake something up inside him and send him back into the next round with renewed intensity.

Same coach.

Same fighter.

Different moment.

Different response.

That idea helped shape what we want The Corner to become.

The module isn’t about teaching students how to fight. It’s about creating a space where someone can first recognize what they are experiencing and then practice responding to it.

Stress.

Fear.

Physical tension.

Self-doubt.

Pressure.

A mistake they can’t stop replaying.

Sometimes those experiences may look similar from the outside, but they don’t always require the same response.

The Corner is being developed around four principles James originally shared with us.

1. Reset Your Body

“Calm the storm first.”

Stress often reaches the body before the mind has time to understand what is happening.

Your heart races. Your muscles tighten. Your breathing changes.

A fighter overwhelmed by adrenaline cannot think clearly. Sometimes the first step is not solving the problem; it is calming the body enough to face it.

That principle is reflected in exercises such as Drop the Guard, focused on recognizing and releasing physical tension.

2. Change the Story

“Your thoughts are not facts.”

Pressure can quickly create a story:

I’m going to fail.

Everyone is judging me.

I can’t do this.

But fear and reality are not always the same thing.

Inside The Corner, Watch the Tape is being developed around that idea; step outside the emotion, look at what is actually happening, and challenge the story your fear is telling you.

3. You Are Not the Only One

“Everyone struggles. You are not alone.”

Even champions get scared.

Even experienced athletes doubt themselves.

James’s coaching story reminded me that sometimes people don’t need more instructions. They need to know that someone is still in their corner.

That principle inspired Everybody Gets Hit.

Not because everyone literally gets hit, but because everyone has moments when life catches them off guard.

Everyone struggles.

Everyone needs a corner sometimes.

4. Grow Through It

“Mistakes are training, not failure.”

Every fighter loses rounds.

The question is what happens next.

A mistake can become information: What happened? What needs to change? What can I do differently next time?

That idea is becoming The Rematch.

A bad test, a lost game, an embarrassing moment, or a mistake does not have to become your identity.

You can learn, adjust, and approach the next round differently.

Why We Call It “The Corner”

The more time we spent talking with James, the more meaningful that word became.

During a fight, the corner is one of the few places where everything briefly stops.

The fighter sits down.

Breathes.

Checks in.

Someone they trust looks at them and asks, directly or indirectly:

What do you need before the next round?

Sometimes the answer is technical.

Sometimes it’s reassurance.

Sometimes it’s perspective.

Sometimes someone needs to calm down.

And sometimes they need someone to wake them up.

That’s what we’re trying to capture.

Not the violence of MMA.

Not the spectacle.

Not the idea of becoming tougher than everyone around you.

We’re interested in the discipline underneath it; the ability to recognize pressure, regulate yourself, listen, adapt, recover from mistakes, and return to whatever comes next.

Why “The Corner”?

During a fight, the corner is one of the few places where everything briefly stops.

The fighter sits down.

Breathes.

Checks in.

And someone they trust tries to understand what they need before the next round.

Sometimes that means calming down.

Sometimes it means changing perspective.

Sometimes it means reassurance.

And sometimes it means finding the energy to get back up.

That is the spirit we are trying to capture with The Corner: MMA Reset.

The module is still a work in progress, and it will continue evolving as we test ideas, listen, and learn.

But the philosophy behind it is becoming clear:

Reset your body.

Change the story.

You are not the only one.

Grow through it.

Most of us will never step into an Octagon.

But all of us will have rounds in life that don’t go according to plan.

And sometimes what matters most isn’t knowing how to fight.

It’s knowing what to do when you get back to your corner.

One year ago, Simply Serene existed only as an idea.

It was an idea I believed in so deeply that I made what was probably the biggest decision of my life—I invested my own college savings to bring it to life.

That first investment wasn’t just money.

It was my belief that students everywhere deserve practical tools to help them navigate stress, anxiety, confidence, and the everyday challenges of growing up.

Today, that idea has become something much bigger.

We’ve assembled an incredible international team of developers, designers, mentors, marketers, and advisors working together across the United States and Europe. Together, we’ve transformed Simply Serene from a vision into a growing platform with one purpose: helping students build healthier minds through simple daily habits.

But we’ve reached an exciting point in our journey.

The foundation has been built.

Now it’s time to grow.

To bring Simply Serene to students around the world, we’re actively seeking investors, strategic partners, and community supporters who believe in our mission. While my college savings helped launch this project, the next stage of development requires a much larger community standing behind it.

Over the coming months, we’ll be presenting Simply Serene throughout Europe, beginning with countries including Poland, Germany, and Greece, while continuing to expand throughout the United States.

Mental wellness isn’t limited by geography.

Neither should the tools that help support it.

I truly believe that every student deserves access to practical techniques that can help them feel calmer, more confident, and better prepared for life’s challenges.

If you believe in empowering the next generation…

If you believe that innovation can improve mental wellness…

If you believe one student’s idea can grow into something that helps millions…

I’d love to invite you to become part of this journey.

Whether you’re an investor, educator, mentor, parent, or simply someone who believes in our mission, your support can help Simply Serene reach the students who need it most.

This is only the beginning.

The dream started with one student.

Now it’s time to share it with the world.
– Anna, Founder, Simply Serene

Today is a really exciting milestone for all of us.

After exploring many different ideas and designs, we’ve finally chosen the official logo for Simply Serene!

This wasn’t a decision I made alone. Our team spent countless hours thinking about what Simply Serene truly stands for and how we wanted that to be reflected in one simple design. With the help of our amazing team in both the United States and Poland, along with my parents, mentors, and our investors, we found the logo that we believe represents our mission the best.

To me, this logo is more than just a symbol. It represents hope, resilience, growth, and the belief that every student deserves practical tools to navigate life’s challenges with confidence.

Simply Serene was created to help middle school, high school, and college students manage stress, anxiety, self-confidence, and the pressures of everyday life. By combining guided breathing, meditation, journaling, confidence-building exercises, and a unique mental resilience approach inspired by professional MMA judge James Lee, we’re building something that we hope will make a real difference in students’ lives.

Choosing our logo is another step toward bringing this vision to life. Now our brand truly has an identity, and this is just the beginning.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey so far. Your encouragement means more than you know.

Stay tuned – we have so many exciting announcements, behind-the-scenes updates, and interviews coming soon. I can’t wait to share what’s next with all of you. – Anna
Founder, Simply Serene

Good morning, everyone.

I woke up today feeling incredibly grateful.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that this all started as an idea, a simple dream of creating something that could help students like me feel a little less overwhelmed. Now, every morning I get to wake up and work alongside an amazing team that’s helping bring that dream to life.

Today started with meetings with our marketing team. Since our team is spread across Michigan, Poland, and other parts of Europe, there’s almost always someone working on Simply Serene. It’s exciting to see how people from different places can come together because they believe in the same mission.

One of the features we’re working on right now is our new Goal Setting section, and I have to admit… it might be one of my favorites.

As I was testing it today, I wasn’t pretending to be a user, I was actually using it for myself. I sat down, took a few deep breaths, cleared my mind, and started writing out my goals. Before I knew it, I had written down eleven things I want to accomplish.

It reminded me why we’re building Simply Serene in the first place.

This isn’t just an app to me.

It’s something I use in my own everyday life.

Every breathing exercise, every meditation, every journal entry, and every new feature is tested because I genuinely believe these are tools that can help students navigate school, friendships, sports, and all the pressure that comes with growing up.

I’m incredibly thankful to work with such talented mentors, developers, designers, my family, and everyone else who believes in this project.

People often remind me that I’m only sixteen years old.

But I’ve learned something over the past year.

Your age doesn’t determine your potential.

Your willingness to learn does.

There have been so many moments when I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t have all the answers, and I definitely didn’t have all the experience. But every time I had a question, someone was willing to teach me. Every mentor, every friend, every family member, and every person who believed in this mission helped me take another step forward.

That’s something I hope everyone remembers.

You don’t have to know everything before you begin.

You just have to be willing to start.

Thank you for being part of this journey with me.

There’s so much more to come, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you.

With gratitude,

I’m excited to share that Notre Dame Prep has featured Simply Serene and the story behind its creation in a new article, “Serenity, Shared.”

Simply Serene began with habits I was trying for myself. Journaling, breathing exercises, and meditation helped me make space to slow down when school, activities, and everyday stress felt overwhelming. As those habits became part of my routine, I started thinking about how to make them easier for other teens to try.

That question grew into Simply Serene, an app I’m developing with teenagers in mind. Notre Dame Prep’s article follows the project from its earliest idea through research, design, mentorship, and testing. It also introduces some of the people who have helped shape it, including professionals in health, psychology, meditation, and technology.

One of the most meaningful parts of the feature is its connection to my years at Notre Dame Prep. I’ve attended the school since first grade, and the teachers, mentors, and friends I’ve met there have encouraged me to turn something I care about into something that could serve others. Seeing that journey told through the perspectives of people in my school community means a lot to me.

Simply Serene is still developing, and I’m looking forward to learning from testing and continuing to improve it. My hope is that it gives teens a welcoming place to practice breathing, meditation, journaling, and other simple ways to pause and check in with themselves.

Thank you to Notre Dame Prep for sharing my story and to everyone who has supported Simply Serene so far.

We are excited to announce another important step forward for Serene. The live version of the app is scheduled to begin testing at Notre Dame School, giving students the opportunity to experience the app in a real-world educational environment.

This testing opportunity has been coordinated with the school’s principal and counselors, whose support has helped make this next phase possible. Their involvement will allow us to introduce the app thoughtfully while gathering meaningful feedback from the people it was designed to support.

Bringing Serene Into a School Environment

Serene was created to provide young people with simple, approachable tools that encourage mindfulness, reflection, and emotional wellbeing.

Testing the app within a school setting will help us better understand how students interact with its features during their everyday routines. It will also give us valuable insight into how Serene can complement the support already provided by educators, counselors, and school communities.

Rather than testing the app only from a technical perspective, this phase will allow us to see how it performs in an environment where students are managing schoolwork, relationships, responsibilities, and the everyday pressures of growing up.

Working With School Leadership and Counselors

The testing process has been coordinated directly with Notre Dame School’s principal and counseling team.

Their guidance is especially valuable because they understand the needs of their students and the realities of supporting mental and emotional wellness within a school community. Working alongside school leadership will help ensure that testing is organized, purposeful, and focused on creating a positive experience for participating students.

We are grateful for their willingness to collaborate with us and help introduce Serene in a thoughtful and supportive way.

Gathering Real-World Feedback

One of the most important goals of school testing is to gather honest feedback from users.

We want to learn which features students find most helpful, whether the app is easy to navigate, and how the overall experience feels during regular use. We will also be looking for opportunities to improve the app before it becomes available to a wider audience.

Feedback may help us better understand:

Which tools students are most likely to use

Whether instructions and activities are easy to follow

How students respond to the app’s design and navigation

Which features feel most engaging or supportive

What changes could improve the overall experience

This real-world feedback will play an important role in shaping the next stage of Serene’s development.

An Exciting Step Toward Launch

Scheduling the live app for school testing represents much more than a technical milestone. It is the first opportunity to see Serene being used within the type of community it was created to serve.

Every stage of this project has been guided by the goal of making self-care feel more accessible to young people. School testing brings us one step closer to understanding how the app can support students in practical, meaningful ways.

There may still be adjustments to make and lessons to learn, but that is exactly why this phase is so valuable. Each piece of feedback will help us refine the app and prepare for a stronger launch.

Looking Ahead

We are incredibly excited to begin testing at Notre Dame School and to learn from the students, counselors, and school leaders participating in this process.

We are also grateful to everyone who has supported Serene as it has grown from an idea into a live app ready for real-world testing.

We look forward to sharing more updates as the school testing phase begins and we continue moving toward the official launch of Serene.

We are excited to share an important update in the development of Serene: the newly redesigned version of our app has been completed and is officially entering the testing phase.

This is a major milestone for a project that has continued to grow, improve, and become closer to the experience we originally imagined. The redesigned app has been created to feel more welcoming, intuitive, and supportive for teens looking for simple ways to slow down, reflect, and take care of their mental wellbeing.

A Fresh Experience Built With Purpose

Redesigning the app was about more than updating its appearance. It was an opportunity to carefully review the entire experience and think about how each part of Serene could feel easier and more meaningful to use.

Every screen, feature, and interaction has been considered with the user in mind. Our goal is to create an app that feels calm and approachable from the moment it opens. We want users to be able to explore the available tools without feeling overwhelmed or unsure about where to begin.

The redesigned version reflects the heart of Serene: making self-care feel simple, realistic, and accessible.

What the Testing Phase Means

Now that the redesign has been completed, the app is moving into testing.

During this phase, we will be reviewing how the app works in real situations. Testing allows us to identify technical issues, improve navigation, review the overall user experience, and make sure each feature works as intended.

We will be paying close attention to questions such as:

Is the app easy to understand and navigate?

Do the different tools and activities work correctly?

Does the design feel clear, calm, and welcoming?

Are there areas that could be made simpler?

Does the app provide a positive and supportive experience?

Feedback during testing will be extremely valuable. Even small observations can help us make meaningful improvements before the redesigned app is introduced to a larger audience.

Preparing for the Next Chapter

Entering testing means we are getting closer to launch, but we also understand the importance of taking our time and getting the details right.

Our priority is not simply to release a new version of the app. It is to create an experience that users can trust and return to when they need a moment to breathe, reset, reflect, or reconnect with themselves.

The testing phase will help us understand what is working well and what may still need to be adjusted. We will use what we learn to continue strengthening the app and preparing it for its official launch.

Thank You for Following Our Journey

Serene began with a simple idea: self-care does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it can begin with one quiet moment, one deep breath, or one honest check-in with yourself.

Seeing the redesigned app reach the testing phase is an exciting reminder of how far this idea has come. We are grateful to everyone who has supported the project, shared encouragement, and followed its progress.

We look forward to sharing more updates as testing continues and we move closer to launching the newly redesigned Serene app.

This is an exciting new chapter, and we are just getting started.

You don’t need an hour. You don’t need candles, a special app, or a perfectly quiet room. You just need five minutes and a little intention.

Most of us end the day by scrolling until we fall asleep, which means our last mental input before bed is a flood of noise — news, other people’s highlights, random content. We wonder why we wake up tired. We wonder why our minds race at night.

Here’s a better way to close out the day. It takes five minutes. And it actually works.

Minute 1–2: Breathe

Before anything else, just breathe. Not the way you’ve been breathing all day — shallow, rushed, on autopilot. Really breathe.

Try box breathing: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat that three or four times. It sounds almost too simple, but there’s real science behind it. Slow, controlled breathing activates your vagus nerve, which signals your nervous system to shift out of fight-or-flight mode. Cortisol drops. Your heart rate slows. Your body starts to actually believe the day is over.

If box breathing feels too structured, try the 4-7-8 method instead: inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale slowly for 8. The long exhale is the key — it’s what triggers the calming response.

Two minutes of intentional breathing is enough to change your physiological state. That’s not a small thing.

Minute 2–4: A Short Meditation

You don’t have to sit cross-legged or empty your mind. That’s not what meditation actually is.

For these two minutes, just sit or lie still and focus on one thing: your breath, a single word like calm or rest, or a simple body scan — starting at the top of your head and slowly releasing tension down through your shoulders, your chest, your hands.

When a thought comes in (and it will), don’t fight it. Just notice it, let it pass, and return to your focus point. That’s the whole practice. You’re not trying to achieve silence — you’re practicing the skill of gently redirecting your attention. Over time, that skill becomes incredibly useful in everyday life.

Even two minutes of this before bed can reduce the mental chatter that keeps so many of us staring at the ceiling.

Minute 4–5: Write It Down

The last minute is for your journal. Just one minute — that’s genuinely all it takes.

You’re not writing an essay. You’re offloading. Write down whatever is sitting heavy on your mind so it doesn’t have to stay there overnight. Then write down one or two things you’re grateful for from the day.

That second part matters more than it might seem. Ending the day with gratitude — even just noting that your coffee was good, or that someone made you laugh — shifts the final frame of your day from stress to appreciation. It doesn’t erase hard things. It just makes sure they aren’t the last thing you hold onto before you sleep.

Why It Works

Each of these three pieces does something different. The breathing resets your body. Meditation quiets your mind. The journaling processes your emotions and ends on a positive note. Together, they create a clean transition — a real signal to yourself that the day is done and it’s safe to rest.

Five minutes. That’s the whole routine.

You don’t have to be a wellness person to do this. You just have to be someone who wants to sleep better, stress less, and end the day feeling a little more at peace.

There’s a ritual I’ve come to rely on at the end of every day. Before I wind down, before I let the day fully slip away, I open my journal.

It doesn’t always look the same. Some nights, I write pages — thoughts spilling out, one thing leading to another, working through whatever is on my mind. Other nights, it’s just a few bullet points. A handful of lines. That’s enough. The format doesn’t matter. What matters is that I show up for it.

It Helps Me Actually Wind Down

The end of the day can feel cluttered. There’s leftover stress, unfinished thoughts, things I meant to do or say. Journaling gives all of that somewhere to go. Once it’s on the page, I don’t have to keep carrying it around in my head. There’s something about the act of writing that signals to my brain: okay, we can let this go now.

It’s become one of the most effective ways I know to actually decompress — not just distract myself, but genuinely transition out of the day.

Seeing My Thoughts on Paper Gives Me Clarity

When something is bothering me, my first instinct now is to write about it. Not because I always have the answer, but because getting it out of my head and onto paper forces me to actually think it through.

There’s a real difference between a worry that’s spinning around in your mind and that same worry written out in full sentences. On paper, it becomes concrete. It becomes smaller, somehow. I can look at it, examine it, and more often than not, find some clarity I didn’t have before. Writing helps me think in a way that just thinking rarely does.

It Keeps Me Practicing Gratitude

This is the part I’d never give up. No matter what kind of day it’s been — stressful, frustrating, exhausting — I end with gratitude. Some positives from the day. Things I’m thankful for, big or small.

It sounds simple, and it is. But it works.

Ending the day focused on what went right, what I appreciated, what I’m grateful for — it genuinely shifts something. The stress doesn’t disappear, but it stops being the last thing on my mind before I close out the night. You can have a hard day and end it on a good note. Gratitude makes that possible.

Journaling doesn’t have to be elaborate or time-consuming. It just has to be honest. Some nights a few bullet points is all it takes. The consistency matters more than the length.

If you’ve ever thought about starting — this is your sign. Pick up a pen, or open a notes app, and just start writing. End with something you’re grateful for. See how the day feels after that.

You might be surprised.

You know the feeling. You finally get into bed, the lights are off, everything is quiet — and suddenly your brain decides it’s the perfect time to replay that awkward thing you said in third period, stress about the test you have Friday, wonder if your friend is mad at you, and question every decision you’ve made in the last two weeks.

It’s exhausting. And it happens to basically everyone in high school.

The good news? You’re not broken, and you’re not stuck with it. Here’s what’s actually going on — and what you can do tonight to make it stop.

Why Your Brain Does This

During the day, you’re busy. Classes, practice, lunch, homework, your phone — there’s always something pulling your attention. Your brain doesn’t have space to process everything that’s happening.

Then you get into bed. It gets quiet. And your brain finally has room to bring up everything it’s been holding onto all day. That’s not a flaw — it’s actually your mind trying to do its job. The problem is it picks the worst possible time.

Understanding that helps. You’re not crazy for overthinking at night. You’re just someone whose brain hasn’t learned how to clock out yet.

Step 1: Give Your Brain a “Worry Window” Earlier in the Day

This sounds weird, but it works. Pick a 10-minute window in the evening — maybe after dinner — and actually let yourself worry. Write down what’s stressing you out. Get it out of your head and onto paper.

When you do this earlier, your brain doesn’t feel the need to bring it all up at midnight. You’ve already acknowledged it. It’s been handled, at least a little.

Step 2: Stop Fighting the Thoughts

The harder you try to not think about something, the louder it gets. You already know this. Tell yourself not to think about your crush and suddenly that’s all you can think about.

Instead of fighting the thoughts, try just noticing them. There’s that worry about the history test. There’s that replay of lunch. Acknowledge it, then let it pass without grabbing onto it. You’re not ignoring it — you’re just not feeding it.

Meditation teaches exactly this skill, and you don’t need to be spiritual or sit in silence for an hour to do it. Even two minutes of just breathing and observing your thoughts without reacting is enough to quiet the spiral.

Step 3: Breathe Your Body Into Calm

Your thoughts and your body are connected. When your mind is racing, your body is tense — and when your body is tense, your mind keeps racing. You have to break the loop somewhere.

Try the 4-7-8 breathing method: breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 7, breathe out slowly for 8. Do it three times. That long, slow exhale activates your parasympathetic nervous system — the part of your body responsible for calming down. It’s basically a manual override for stress.

Your body can’t be in full anxiety mode and full relaxation mode at the same time. Use your breath to choose which one wins.

Step 4: End the Night With Something Good

A big reason nighttime overthinking spirals so hard is because your brain is searching for resolution — some sense of closure on the day. When everything feels unfinished or uncertain, it keeps spinning.

Journaling before bed gives your brain that closure. You don’t need to write much. Just get whatever is sitting heavy on your mind out of your head and onto paper. Then — and this part is important — write down one or two things that were actually good about today. Even something small.

It’s hard to overthink your way into a spiral when the last thing you wrote down was something you’re grateful for. It doesn’t erase the stress. It just gives your brain something better to land on.

The Bigger Picture

Overthinking at night usually isn’t about the specific things you’re overthinking. It’s about not having a way to process the day before it ends. The fix isn’t to have a perfect, stress-free life — it’s to build a small routine that gives your mind permission to rest.

Breathing. A few minutes of stillness. Writing it down and ending with gratitude.

That’s it. It won’t fix everything, but it will make tonight a little quieter than last night.
